Job Description

Autolite spark plugs is looking for a temporary (4-6 months) Engineering lab technician. The Engineering lab is responsible for all R&D activities, product design, and product testing. This position will focus on bench testing of spark plugs and related support testing.


  • Support analytical investigation of spark plug evaluations. Perform materials and spark plug Engineering Standard tests per engineering spec and/or instructions. Testing may include dielectric test, mechanical test, resistor durability test, engine dynamometer testing, or testing on other equipments.
  • Prepare, analyze, and archive test samples. Build prototype spark plugs as instructed.
  • Organize, analyze, and document test data in appropriate test reports.
  • Technical interface with engineers, quality, and sales personnel regarding testing.
  • Complete assigned lab tests or projects independently in timely manner. Monitor routine lab operations and make corrections in case of nonconformance.   Drive process improvement efforts for maximizing the effectiveness and contributions of the Ignition Lab. Provide training in areas of major technical expertise.
  • Maintain safe and organized work areas. Recognize potentially hazardous situations, both inside and outside of direct area of responsibility, and take appropriate measures to correct.

Job Requirements

Associate Degree in Technology or equivalent experience - preferred, not required

2 - 5 years Laboratory technician experience with set-up and operation on various Test Equipment Systems - preferred, not required

High level of Mechanical skill

Mechanical and Hydraulic machine operation

Electrical or Electronics knowledge a plus

Good oral and written communication skills

PC proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite)

Good math skills

Thoroughness, accuracy and attention to detail

Quickly acquire knowledge of product test methods and equipment

Ability to work with minimal supervision 

Physical Requirements

Must be capable of free lifting 50 lbs. to chest levels.

Must be capable of lifting and moving weights greater that 50 lbs. with the assistance of hoists, cranes, dollies or hand trucks. Movements may include twisting, turning, grasping and bending. 

Must be capable of tightening bolts, fasteners, and test parts to specified torques as high as 135 Nm (100 lb-ft) using specified tools.

Use of some personal protective equipment requires no facial hair.
